In the past week, there have been a couple of retirements.
Ronald Lam of Hong Kong, who this fall would have been Hong Kong's first skater on the Grand Prix, has announced his retirement. Last season was the best of career, and no one could blame him for wanting to end on a high note. He placed thirteenth at Four Continents, a full fifteen places higher than his previous placement. He placed fourteenth at Worlds, a full fourteen place jump.
I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.
The other retirement comes from Caydee Denney and John Coughlin. The team paired up in 2011, and had an excellent debut season. They had two top five finishes on the Grand Prix circuit and won the US title that year. They won the silver medal at Four Continents, and at Worlds, they placed a respectable eighth. They then lead the US team to the silver medal at the World Team Trophy.
Since then, their career has been marred by injury.
In the 2012-13 season, they won two bronze medals on the Grand Prix, but were forced to withdraw from Nationals due to Coughlin having undergone surgery in December. They petitioned to be put on the World team, and were accepted, but decide not to come. The next season, they placed third and fourth in their two Grand Prix events. They placed third at Nationals, though, after a stellar performance from Zhang and Bartholomay. They were not given places on the Olympic team, despite having a better repertoire.
Denney and Coughlin were named to the World team, but forced to withdraw this time to due an injury to Denney. They sat out the 2014-15 season, and on the 27th of this month, decided to retire. Denney is now coaching, and Coughlin has been doing commentating for IceNetwork. They said they will continue to skate in shows. I wish them the best.
Coming up is still that Evegni Plushenko article, as well as preview of the first two Junior Grand Prix events!
